Update Confluence when using the embeded database

IST March 27, 2019

I knwo that we should not use the embedded database. but for our application this is enough for us.

Because of the latest security advisory for confluence server I would like to upgrade our Confluence V 6.11.2 to the actuel version 6.15.1.

But it looks it ist not possible to upgrade as long we use the embedded database.

Or is there any way to do the update anyway?

Or do I have do to a new installation of Confluence?
When yes can I use the old license?

already thanks for your help

Daniel

Hi,

best thing what you can do is make XML backup and make new installation with use regular database like PostgreSQL. If it's your production you shouldn't use HSQL. If you have valid maintenance you can use it with latest version if not use it with last version before maintenance has ended.

You can find here several questions regarding currupted HSQL DB files in last few weeks. HSQL is can be corrupted from many reasons.

You need to answer this question: If I lose data is it ok for me?

If you answer yes - then continue with HSQL

If you answer no - then migrate data to normal DBMS

Hi Petr
Thanks for the fast replay.

We do a backup all 24 hours.
It is no big thing, if we would lose a few hours ... we don' hat many changes in Confluence.

When I understand you right, I have to do also a new installation when I still wanna use the HSQL. There is no other way?

Do you have experience to import the xml backup to a PostgreSQL DB or Microsoft® SQL Server® 2014  Express DB?
Do I have to pay attention to something special?

Big thanks, Daniel

"It's not big thing"... but still you will be more satisfied and happy with PostgreSQL (for example).

Regarding migration:
You will just install new instance, set database connection and finish this installation. Then i nadministration you will need just import it into Confluence.

You will be ok if you follow this KB article: https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/restoring-a-site-152034.html

I have experience primary with PostgreSQL.

If you will have somequestions or problems let me know.

Hi Petr
In the moment I will still use the embedded database.

I have done a new Confluence installation with the newest version and imported our data by the XML backups and copied my original server.xml file ... and that was it ... everything is running.

As soon I have time I will try to change to a SQL database...
But for the moment it's done for me

Thanks again for the help
Daniel
