The Filter I'm using to create this gadget returns more than 50 items. I'm configuring this dashboard gadget and I would like to include as many results as are returned by the Filter I've selected.

However, in the field 'Number of results' when I input any number greater than 50 then I get an error message saying 'Provided value must be a number'. Is this a bug or am I configuring incorrectly?

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Yes, that error message is wrong, it should say "you can not have more than 50 results".

However, the cap on results is not a cap on the results from your filter, it's a limit on how much of the gadget is displayed.

I am not sure what the limit does on the 2d gadget, but if you were to use your filter in a simple "filter statistics" gadget, which gives you one line with a number of results from your filter, then a limit of 25 would mean it only shows you the first 25 rows of results.

Imagine you run a filter for just "component is not empty", when you have 200 different components spread across projects and all used one one or more of 10,000 issues.

The filter statistics gadget would look like

  • Red: 4,000
  • Green: 3,000
  • Cerulean: 1,500
  • Aquamarine: 17
  • and so-on

That list would be 200 lines long, but if you set the gadget results to 2, it would only display red and green.  It's still reporting on every issue returned by the filter, it's just not showing you all the results.

I think the 2d gadget works on a line (y axis) limit too, as I've got a 2d gadget with 20 rows and 10 columns, so I know it's not cutting off on 200 cells containing results.

I usually set all my gadgets limits to 50, unless the intention is "show me the top five", and it is rare to find a need for a report where more than 30 lines is actually useful - people want to look at the big numbers!
