Staging server starts, but ask for database connection parameters

Ramiro Borgonovo May 6, 2019

Hi, We are planning an upgrade. As recommended here:

https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/create-a-staging-environment-for-upgrading-confluence-866094180.html

We performed 2. Replicate your database

and

3. Replicate Confluence

copyyng the database to a develpment enviroment, and the confluence directories to a new server.

We start atlassian confluence service, and acces de localhost url, but we get the screen bellow:

confluence.PNG

it looks like the configuration assistent after a succesfull fresh instalation. The issue onwards is that is is going to overwrite the copied database. It warns

Confluence tables already exist in the selected database

And give the options: continue and overwrite existing data, or Restart database setup.

Any ideas?

Hi Ramiro,

Thank you for reaching out! Happy to help.

The fact that Confluence doesn't see the existing database settings in confluence.cfg.xml leads me to believe that something didn't get copied over entirely or updated.

  1. Both the Confluence Installation Directory and the entire Home Directory need to be copied over to the staging server. You can have a look at Confluence Home and Other Important Directories for how to find the exact location of these in case you are not sure. If you were to leave out the Home Directory for example, you would have this issue.
  2. Following that, under Replicate Confluence, you need to make sure to update the Configuration files to point to the new database. I recommend that you check the new <home-directory>/confluence.cfg.xml file and ensure that it is pointing to your new database. You may need to stop Confluence if you need to make an adjustment to this setting.

I would encourage you to try the procedure again in case you still have any issues, because the existence of data from the prior instance in the Home Directory should not have it try to go through setup again.

Let me know if you have any trouble or questions about this!

Regards,

Shannon

Hello Shanon.

You are right. The person who copied the productive file system, for de application data\confluence, named the folder appData\confluence.zip

That led me to made a mistake when recreating the staging server file system for confluence application, and so confluence wasn't finding the database configuration file.

Once the wrong folder got renamed, all started working fine.

Ramiro
