Renaming existing Variables

I am trying to determine how to rename an existing variable from a template.

I named my variable $oldvariablename, but I want to remove that variable from my list of current variables or rename it to $newvariablename

Is this possible

I tried on my test instance and indeed when I delete a variable from the template then save and reopen, it is no longer on the menu. So instead of renaming, a workaround would be to create a new one with the name you want.
