Pasting markdown directly into new page removes first character of words per column

Does anyone have any guidance on pasting markdown directly into a new page? It seems that something like this:
Problem | Solution
--- | ---
Test | Check this

Is removing the first letter from "Test" and "Check"
I've tried various markdown editors and this seems to work no problem, but not in our confluence space.
