I wanted to see if we could show the page tree visually as a map, with the option of drill down.

That's what the page tree macro does (as does the space content tree in the space settings area)
I think you might need to explain what you think a "map" would look like?

Ok, that is actually just the page-tree flipped over, rotated 90 degrees and boxed instead of by line.
You could use one of the diagramming add-ons and some scripting/code to draw something up, but it would not be dynamic with drill-down and you'd need to regenerate it every time a page was added, deleted, renamed or moved.
