Page number links on search results not working

Kathi Gosche July 8, 2019

My Confluence search feature is not working properly. My search term returns five pages of matches with the first page listing 10 results. When I click any of the page numbers at the bottom of the page to advance to the next page, including "next", it doesn't advance. How do I fix this?

I am running Confluence 5.9.11 and all my plug-ins are up to date.

Shannon,

It's an entire zip file. How do I find the relevant snippet?

Correct, I am not logged in because I am replicating my user's experience. External users don't have accounts to log into, or need one, to view content. However, as a logged-in user, the problem does not occur.

Confluence 5.9.11 is what I was running when I posted the original question. As far as I can tell, it only had one kind of search. We upgraded to the newest version of Confluence (6.15.6) as suggested and it has two types of search: Basic and Advanced. Advanced is accessed by clicking the named link in the Basic search screen (screenshot above). Advanced has the same page number issue 5.9.11 had. Here is a screenshot of the Advanced search.

Thanks for your help.

Thank you, Kathi.

The support logs are not in a zip file except if you are using the Support Zip to obtain them. I think you might be referring to this.

I sent you earlier some information that will help you to find your log files:

You can also check the Confluence Server Logs when attempting to access the next page of search results, and it should let us know what the issue is accessing the search.

You'll need to have access to the server to do this, so you may need to get in touch with your server admin if that person is not you. From here, trigger the error again while tailing your server logs, and you will be able to see the output in your terminal. You can then copy and paste the relevant logs here, or in Pastebin, as suggested earlier.

So from my understanding of your issue, you access advanced search anonymously. You get 5 pages of results displayed, and you try to click on the next page, (e.g. 2) and instead it takes you to the screenshot that you sent on Monday, is this correct?

Can you please confirm if you have any 3rd party add-ons installed that might be affecting this functionality? If so, can you please put Confluence in safe mode and let me know if the issue persists? For instructions on how to do this, check out Disabling and Enabling Apps, under Disabling or enabling all apps (using Safe Mode).

Thank you for your help.

Regards,

Shannon

Hi Shannon,

I'll pull my server admin in on this. He is out today, so it will be a day or two at the earliest.

Yes, that describes the issue pretty well. It simply does not advance past page one results.

I have third-party add-ons, but I have also reproduced this problem in Safe Mode as discussed earlier.

Thanks for your help.

Kathi,

Thank you for confirming. It would also help if you trigger the behavior while watching the Network tab under your browser's Developer Tools. You can record that information as a HAR file and it might also help us to determine what is causing the issue.

Shannon

Hi Shannon,

We ran the test, but the log files show no data related to this issue. I did record the HAR file as suggested. Here is a link to the file.

Thanks!

Hello Kathi,

Thank you for sharing that. You would be able to run the HAR file through a HAR viewer, like the one mentioned in the article I sent you:

I don't personally see anything odd but you can share this with your server admin to see if you all see anything out of the ordinary as well.

We are still testing on our end here, but we're not able to replicate that behavior. Unfortunately, we really can't proceed without being able to see your server logs, so I am creating a support ticket for you now. This way, you can send the support zip and our team can have a look at it locally.

Please check your email in a few minutes and you'll be able to find the support ticket there.

Regards,

Shannon

Hello Kathi,

Thank you for contacting us about this.

Confluence 5.9.11 is very much out-of-date and I would say this is likely something that has been fixed in the years since its release. In addition, we had a pair of serious security vulnerabilities and so you should now be updated to a later version. For more information, please see this FAQ my colleague Daniel created:

My advice to you would be to go ahead and perform the upgrade, and then let us know if you're still experiencing the issue.

Let us know if you have any trouble.

Regards,

Shannon

Thanks Shannon. I updated to Confluence 6.15.6 with the default theme, but the problem persists in the Advanced Search feature. Additionally, the updated search feature has Filters, which is nice, but some of those filters like Contributor and Space Catagory won't mean anything to my external users. Is there a way to control what filters are presented?

Hello Kathi,

Does the issue persist if you put Confluence in Safe Mode? Does this occur with any search or only specific queries?

You can also check the Confluence Server Logs when attempting to access the next page of search results, and it should let us know what the issue is accessing the search.

For your 2nd question, there's no setting to disable specific filters from being used in Advanced Search. Please feel free to submit this as a feature request to jira.atlassian.com!

Shannon

Hi Shannon,

The problem persists in Safe mode and seems to happen with all queries.

I have asked the person responsible for our Confluence server to retrieve the log files. I'm a Confluence admin, but not an admin of the shared server that it is hosted on.

The filters I am referring to are applied to the basic search. Please see the attached screenshot. I apologize for not stating that more clearly before. I did, however, file a feature suggestion as suggested.

Thanks for all your help. It is greatly appreciated.

Shannon, Is there a way I can send you the log file directly?

Kathi,

There is not, but you can paste the relevant snippet here or in something like Pastebin.

From your screenshot, I do not see any page numbers. You mentioned you were clicking the page numbers but that they weren't loading any more search results. In this screenshot, I see another problem, and that is that Confluence doesn't consider your user to be logged in. Can you confirm that you are currently logged in? what happens when you click Log in on that page?

Regards,

Shannon
