Hello,
I am trying to find a solution to notify users in case they have been mentioned on a page and later the page gets changed, commented, etc.
Is it possible to automatically add a mentioned user as a watcher? Or alternatively add a field to the page where a user can be selected and this user will then become a watcher of the page?
Thanks in advance
Johannes
Hi,
generally this is done automatically when creating a user or a user logs in for the first time.
Email notification is done by configuring the email settings in the user profile. This is switched on for pages/spaces a user contributed to (Autowatch).
Mentioning a user always triggers a notification. If the user just views the page he's been mentioned on & does not watch this page (or the space), he will not receive a notification on comments or changes unless he's mentioned again.
Adding users to a page or space watch can be done by a space administrator or by the user himself.
Also make sure, that the page a user should be notified on is not restricted, so that he cannot see it & the space is readable for him.
There is one more thing to know:
Confluence allows to save/publish a page with a "Minor Editing/Change" flag. This is used by certain addons to avoid mail flooding (eg. No Email Storm). If you're using this addon, there are two options to save a page: "Publish"/"Update" and "Update and Notify". In case of just updating a page, no notifications will be send.
Remember that a user can switch off being notified by mail, he cannot switch off the messages in the notification box in Confluence.
Differentiate between notifications & email notifications: Users tent to get too many mails & like to reduce this. We use the Confluence blogging feature quite a lot & made our users subscribe to all blog posts (Email settings in profile). This ensures that (given that the user is allowed to see the blog), he will receive a mail ONCE & then has to decide to watch the page or not.

Hi JP,
thanks a lot for your lengthy response.
I think for my purposes it is necessary to use a plugin like ScriptRunner to automatically at users as watchers for pages which belong to specific topics or Tree View to give users the option to watch whole categories/sections.
I will try it with those.
Best regards
Johannes
