Hello,

Restoring an earlier version of Confluence on to a newer version can work, but should not be used as an alternative to upgrading as outlined in Restoring a Site.

I recommend creating an upgrade path and test it in a test instance that is a copy of your production:

  1. Create a test server with the same Confluence code version as production by either restoring an XML backup or if your instance is too big, copying your home and prod folders and restoring DB backup onto a new server.
  2. Referencing Upgrade guides proceed with upgrade following an upgrade path
  3. Upgrade 4.3.1 to 5.10.9 by following Upgrade Guide
  4. There are some major changes in codes moving 4 to 5, for example, DB attachment storage is depreciated, so if you encounter issues upgrading 5.3.1 to 5.10.9 you can try and upgrade to an earlier version of Confluence 5. Also note and make sure you meet supported platforms list, especially DB version. If your DB is not a match, try to find latest 5 Confluence version that still supports your DB version and upgrade to that, then upgrade DB and proceed with Confluence upgrade.
  5. After you upgraded to Confluence 5.10.9, you can proceed with the upgrade to any version of Confluence 6.*. You can pick our Enterprise release or go to the latest one, make sure to follow upgrade guide matching your target version, Here is one for Enterprise 6.6.*

Make sure to take adequate backups before each step.

In regards to HW change, you can either move your instance before or after an upgrade by following Migrating Confluence Between Servers guide, but if your current server is not sufficiently powerful to accommodate target version, I recommend either using your new server 2016 for testing and switch over or migrate production to it.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Igor

Hi!

Have you tried to backup and restore in new instance? (https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/site-backup-and-restore-163578.html)

For many use cases, it works.

Or you can import spaces in new installation.

Cheers,
