Migrate JIRA+Confluence from server to cloud

Hi guys. We have been considering JIRA + Confluence in the cloud for a very long time now, but we keep getting stuck with questions about the migration process.

Our main question is: We currently have JIRA + Confluence on our local server, and Confluence is linked to the JIRA user directory.

Is it possible to migrate both systems without too much hassle? (i.e. no space-by-space import/export, no reconfiguration of permissions for every conf. space or JIRA project).

And in general: how should we approach the migration? JIRA first, Confluence second?

Answer: The Cloud Migration Assistant for Confluence, a free Atlassian-built app, replaces the need for space by space import in Confluence. For a better understanding of the complexity involved in each migration, have a look at the resources I've included above. Migration complexity will vary depending on the size of your data, which server version you're on, which apps or custom integrations you have, and a few other key factors.

How should we approach the migration? Jira first, Confluence second?

Answer: Yes, if you're migrating both Jira and Confluence, we recommend migrating Jira first. Migrating Confluence before Jira could result in your users being wiped from your cloud site once Jira is imported. Learn more about migrating Jira from server to cloud. After migrating Jira along with your users, you can use the Cloud Migration Assistant for Confluence to migrate your Confluence spaces from Confluence Server to Confluence Cloud.

Hi we want to do confluence first then jira.

Also how is the rollback solution if users are being wiped? We use JIRA & Confluence with approx 700 user we need a fallback option

Given the size of your user base, I strongly recommend opening a support ticket with our migration support team to answer all of your questions and make sure you have the help you need planning your migration strategy. They can also answer questions about rollback options. Just be sure to choose "Migration support" in the first dropdown to get help quickly. 

Now on to your questions:

You can migrate Confluence first, but we currently recommend importing your Jira users before the Confluence migration (see If you're migrating both Jira and Confluence > Option 2) in the documentation. 

Depending on the timing of your migration, the Jira Cloud Migration Assistant may also be live, in which case we may have alternative recommendations. 

Your basic order of operations would be:

1. Have our technical support team bulk import your Jira users to your cloud site for you via CSV (see instructions in the documentation).
2. Migrate Confluence to cloud using the Cloud Migration Assistant for Confluence.
3. Migrate Jira to cloud using Jira site import. Just be sure to choose to merge with existing users in cloud when you import your XML backup.

You should review very well which add-ons are you currently using and if they are available on cloud. Add-on architecture is completely different between server and cloud so a lot of nifty add-ons are not available for cloud.

I'd be tempted to do JIRA first, as it's more complex, but there's not really a lot in it in terms of migration.
