Max recommended frequency of automated page updates

Tom Svaleklev
October 28, 2019

We use Confluence (+ refined Theme) as our intranet and some of our departments wants to update status pages from our own internal systems automatically using Confluence APIs.

This evolves in a page update every time something displayed on the page changes which in their case is hundreds of times a day.

From a page history and log perspective this worries me a bit and I wonder if someone has experience or best practices to share on this topic. tried to Google recommendations from Atlassian but didn't get any hits.

This doesn't really answer your question of what frequency is best for this or whether the growing history is going to be a big problem but if you're concerned with pushing this data into your Confluence all the time you could go the opposite route and pull it upon page view.

Using a tool like PocketQuery you could execute arbitrary REST requests upon page view and display their result using a macro. You can even configure your own cache period so your pages being hit "hundreds of times a day" shouldn't be a problem (as long as you're fine with the data only being updated every 5 minutes or so).

If you're sticking to the push method it would probably be a good idea to find a way to frequently delete old page versions. It seems this app would do the job in that case.

Best,
Sven (Scandio, makers of PocketQuery)
