Is there a way to automatically assign numbers to articles

We are using Confluence as our knowledge base.  In our old one, the system automatically assigned KB numbers to each of our documents; thereby, we have a single number to reference in other related articles.  Is there a way to do it in Confluence?

As we don't have a option readily available in confluence, you can also consider other possibilities like

Manual Prefixing with Custom Text Fields
