I would like bring up a single Confluence instance in AWS Cloudformation and, using only userdata, install Confluence and connect it to an existing AWS RDS instance where it's data is stored. Is this at all possible in an Atlassian supported way? If not, when will that capability exist?

Hello David and welcome to the Community!

Confluence does not allow for a symbolic link to be used for the home directory. You must define an absolute path. However, you may map a drive and then move the Confluence home directory to said mapped drive. Doing this is though it may cause slower performance due to network dependency on the mapped drive. There is also a chance of possible corruption issues if the mapped drive is removed or disconnected while the Confluence service is still running.

You may find more about what is support eligible with Confluence at Supported Platforms and further information about Confluence directories at  Confluence Home and other important directories.

We hope this proves helpful and you’re able to deploy Confluence within your requirements while being supported.
