Is it possible to show a rendered link to a heading on my confluence space's overview page?

Normally when i paste a copied link to a heading from a confluence page, i get a nice rendered link like this:

However when i copy a link from my confluence space's overview page, this rendering does not work. I copy it like this

But when I paste it, I cannot get it to render nicely in confluence:

Hi @Peter Miller

  1. I copied a link to an H2 (in the edit mode).

  2. Pasted the link onto another page.
  3. Then I used the link options menu

  4. And it rendered properly (showing embed, but it work with inline and card options too)

If you click Link preferences (see step 3), you'll be able to set the default behavior for your links. https://id.atlassian.com/manage-profile/link-preferences

As a side note from anecdotal evidence and personal experience...

  • Once in a while, stuff happens on Confluence that renders rendering links unreliable for a couple of hours.
  • If you do a lot of changes on your side, indexing has troubles catching up and while linking works upon copy/paste, rendering might not for certain pages. You can request re-index via Atlassian Support or trigger re-indexing manually by importing a mock space.

hi @Kris Klima _K15t_ did you copy the heading link from your space's overview page? yes this works for me with every other page in confluence, but not the overview page.

working for a heading from a non-overview page:

not working for a heading from an overview page:

Hi @Peter Miller

I did test it...

On the following screenshot, the first link was created by a simple copy/paste of the link to the page. The second using the Command/K (on a Mac) menu. The third, using Command/K over a text string.

What's your Link Preferences default setting?

@Kris Klima _K15t_ hmm interesting. I guess its not a bug then since it seems to be working for you.

My Link Preferences are the same as yours:

Though I found that even if I change it to `Display URL` it still shows as per `Display Inline` when I paste a link to a (non-overview) heading. So maybe there are some defaults for my company that are overriding my personal preferences?

@Peter Miller

I never changed my setting for links so I don't know...

I found documentation, maybe you spot something that will trigger a cue. https://support.atlassian.com/confluence-cloud/docs/insert-links-and-anchors/

If not, I'd contact Atlassian support https://support.atlassian.com/contact/#/ - maybe there's a dependency that is not documented.

Hi @Peter Miller

I tested it on my instance too – Smart Links (the feature you mentioned) don't support rendering URL with #heading from the Overview page yet. It only renders a link to the page itself (without a #heading).

Some temporary solutions I would recommend if you want your page to look clean:

  • Use a regular hyperlink to your manually typed text
  • Link directly to the overview page (not including #heading) with a note to locate the specific heading

Hope it helps 🙌

thanks @Liam - DevSamurai good to know its not specific to my instance. do you know if atlassian plan to support this feature in future? or do you reckon this would be a bug?

I think you can bring this to Atlassian by submitting your feedback for Confluence directly through this link: https://jira.atlassian.com/projects/CONFCLOUD/summary

@Peter Miller Sorry for the misleading link above. Atlassian has restricted create permissions on many of these public projects (including CONFCLOUD) in recent years to manage spam, quality, and triage.

As you are on the Standard plan, you can contact Atlassian support directly via: https://support.atlassian.com/contact/#/
