Is it legal to copy/ paste articles from internet into Jira confluence without any modifications?

Valentina Galea August 24, 2021

I want to know more details regarding the copyright and the integrity of the Confluence content.

In many cases I have noticed that people tend to perceive Confluence as a personal space, where an organization takes notes.

Which are the limitations regarding this aspect?
is it legally safe to copy paste articles from all over the Internet without mentioning the source or it is mandatory to  at least modify the information provided or to give the source links.

Thank you very much,

This is something you would need to ask of a lawyer, not people here to talk Atlassian tech.

Generally, I would default to assuming that it is illegal because everything is effectively copyright protected and hence you shouldn't be taking it without the owners consent.

Linking to public documents is fine, copying them without consent AND losing the original author's information so they can't be attributed to them - nope, that's almost certainly going to be illegal.

But please check that with a proper lawyer.

Hello,

My intention was to find more details from an Atlassian representative who will be able to give me an opinion from an Atlassian point of view, not a lawyer point of view. I know what a lawyer could say and I’m totally agree with what you said already, but specific for this situation let me rephrase my question:

“Is Atlassian enforcing its users by terms of conditions or other terms to always specify the source or to have original text when using the Confluence product? If yes, could you please point me where I can find more details about it?”

PS: I hope I did not upset you with my first question and now I have managed to transmit the information better

have a nice day,

I don't think Atlassian will say much different.  "Don't host illegal content in our products" is not something you really need to write into a contract or agreement.

But, of course, I can't speak for them.  I suspect they'd recommend a local lawyer, but I don't think the question is localised to Atlassian stuff - it's a good question of any software you might copy and paste copyrighted data into, even client based software like Word or Writer.

No, there's no upset, your question is the sort of one that makes me happier!  It's a good question to ask, you've made the effort to explain the question properly, and done it well, it was very clear.  I would prefer more people to ask the way you do!
