Hi,

I have a question concerning the possibility to install Confluence on a managed server

I tried to install Confluence on a managed server that I rented and where I do not have root rights and there is also no Java running on it. A database is included. As far as I could figure it out, it might not be possible to run Confluence in this environment. Am I right?

Thanks a lot for your help in advance.

Edward,

Confluence runs on Java, but we include a JRE that you can use to run Confluence. Have a look at System Requirements for more details.

The minimum hardware requirements you won't likely find on a shared server, so here they are so you can compare:

  • CPU: Quad core 2GHz+ CPU
  • RAM: 6GB
  • Minimum database space: 10GB

In addition, you will want to be able to have access to the filesystem, because this is how you can check your Confluence server logs. You will also need it for various maintenance such as manual re-indexing, cache clearing, etc.

As for your database, not all database versions are supported, so it's important to verify if the included one is the type you need. You can find out this information from our Supported Platforms page. There are a few things to consider besides the database version. For example, if MySQL is the database that's included, then you will also need to manually install the driver. Note that there is an embedded H2 database in Confluence you can use for testing, but it should never be used on a production Confluence instance.

For more details about your database configuration:

Let me know if you have any questions about this.

Shannon

Edward,

You're welcome! Another thing I wanted to mention - to start and stop Confluence you will also need access to the command line on your server.

Take care,

Shannon
