I need to remove internal users from internal directory

Vasanthakumar V July 11, 2023

I am trying to remove internal user from internal directory in Jira but I am not able to do it, since those users are associated with issues, commends, filters and boards. Is there any way to remove those users?

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

The standard recommendation is to not remove users, there's no need to, and it damages your history.

Instead, you should deactivate them.  An inactive account can't log in and do anything, and it can't be selected from user picker fields (assignee, reporter etc) when creating or editing issues.  The user account remains intact, so all your history still works.

You can also anonymise them if that's the reason you think you want to delete.

Hi @Vasanthakumar V ,

  1. You can't delete/remove a user from Jira if they’ve reported any issues, commented on any issues, or been assigned to any issues.
  2. Rather than deleting a user, deactivate their account. Deactivating a user's account will prevent it from being used, but it will preserve that user's history of activity.
  3. You can also Anonymize user (https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver/anonymizing-users-992677655.html)

All these are explained in https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver/create-edit-or-remove-a-user-938847025.html
