We are using jira cloud and I am trying to add json as one of the languages to use in code macro of confluence.
I have tried several guides but none of them are helping. is it even possible? if so does anyone have a link or an explanation?
is ad-on the only answer, or is it just configuration I am missing?

It's not possible to add JSON, but we do have a feature request for it in the future:
Please vote on that and comment there with your usage case.
For the time being, if you require JSON formatting, then you will want to consider one of the Marketplace add-ons.
