How to add a custom code block macro?

for GitHub and every other markdown previewer I've used, formatted text that is code is always wrapped in ```code```, but when pasting a markdown file into a blank page in confluence, the previewer does not interpret it correctly. 

How do signify to confluence that this text is a code block?
