How long can an article or document remain in Confluence?

Is there any sort of auto-delete or auto-archive? If auto-archive, how would one retrieve it from the archive?

There isn't auto-archive or auto-delete, but you can implement content lifecycle management with the Better Content Archiving app.

No it will remain as long as you decide to archive or delete it.
