How change Navigation Pane layout to show more information

We recently upgraded to 6.5.2 from a much older version/theme.  Now when I'm in my space, I can't see much in relation to the pages under out space.  It only shows 3 levels at any given time so I have no idea where I'm at in the space, let alone in relation to other components in the space.  I get lost continually now and have to memorize where everything is instead of being able to "see" where stuff is.  I can't seem to find any place where to configure this to show the whole tree and not just the current one-up and one-down display.

Also, I've seen in the help where it says I should be able to make changes to my sidebar and remove unnecessary items, except I don't have the pencil icon it refers to.  

Can someone please tell me how to get back to the prior tree view?  This new layout is totally unusable.

Also, in cruising around (essentially wasting my time because I couldn't find anything that I needed) I came across this display.  But where is the Tree Browser to go with the heading?  I don't see any tree...
