How can I improve default confluence search without expensive plug-ins?

I'm using version 6.3.3 on server and trying to find out whether there's anything I can do to improve the search capabilities/functionality after several complaints from my teams about the terms they use vs. the results that are returned

I have looked in to a few 3rd party options but they just so expensive! Any help would be appreciated.
