How can I format Action Items in Confluence Wiki and upload them with the REST API?

I was able to create and upload a "markdown-ish" document to Confluence Cloud, using the Conflunce Python API and setting the page representation as "wiki"

However one thing that I have not yet figured out is how to insert a checkbox, i.e. an action item. 

I was able to find this page which has excellent documentation on most of what I needed: https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/confluence-wiki-markup-251003035.html

However, it does not describe the markup for creating a checkbox/action item, is it possible to do this?
