The macro works by essentially generating static images of each slide and displaying them as images. Video/gif content isn't compatible with the way the previews are generated.
We had an open feature request for support for gifs/animation in previews, but it was closed due to low interest. You can comment on the feature request with any additional details, but based on the activity it's had so far, it doesn't seem like something we will be working on.
