We are cloud customer.  Do I need to do my own backups or do you handle backups on our behalf.

This is mission critical and I want to make sure that our data is backed up.

Yes, there are backups, but it's probably not quite what you are imagining.

Atlassian take backups of Cloud which are suitable for their disaster recovery.  If they lost some or all of a Cloud data centre pile of servers, the backups are suitable for getting all the affected systems back.

They are not suitable for individual backups, and Atlassian will not give you copies of their backups, because they belong to many Cloud customers, and are not suitable for restoring individual systems.

If you want your own backups, you can get a download (suitable for moving to server or building a new Cloud system) once every 2 days.  Most of us script it if we want to do something regularly.4
