Documentation release management

We are planning to use Confluence as our customer facing tech documentation wiki and would like to plan releases of documentation. 

How does one achieve this? Say we would like to make changes to 2 existing documents and add 3 documents in one shot. Do we maintain a "pilot" confluence and then mirror the docs over somehow ?
