Delete space failed

I am trying to delete a space that is no longer used but getting a "delete space failed" message from<mysite>/wiki/spaces/doremovespace.action?key=xx.

Considering the space has no content, it takes a long time (typically 5-15 mins) for this message to appear, and the time elapsed value keeps jumping up and down.

Please advise how to remove the space?

(PS - the underlying issue is I'm trying to import a space with the same key as this one. This space isn't used, hence assuming deleting it and re-using the key is the best option - happy to be advised of a better way!)
