I rememeber now, it was the adaptavist content formatting macro that broke everything :(
You will have a plugin that is not compaitable with the version of confluence you are runnning. I removed an out of date plugin from the UPM and all worked fine again.

i have the same issue. The system plugin is disabled and I don't have an option to enable it.
