Creating a link with wiki markup

I'd like to create a link to an external page from the sidebar and I'm having some issues with one particular link.

I know this works [https://www.place.com] and this works [https://www.place.com/subdir]

but if that second link is actually a redirect the link dies there.  Is there something I'm missing?

Can you confirm with me your Confluence version, and do you have an example of a link that I can test?

When you said it dies there, do you meant that the redirect doesn't complete? What does happen instead? Do you get an error message?
