Correct way to update attachments in wiki

Those new to the Atlassian Community have posted less than three times. Give them a warm welcome!
We use a shared page to disseminate content assets to build teams.
Previously, I'd upload a new attachment version over the top of the existing asset via the main wiki page. This ensured previous versions were still available and linked to the newest version.
This option seems to have disappeared.
Instead, I uploaded a new version via the attachments page. However, the link on the wiki is now a gibberish number, rather than the filename, leading to confusion.
Files are initially uploaded directly into the wiki page.
