Confluence upgrade failed after catalinabkp-delete.out

I am upgrading my Confluence Server from 6 to 7.

I ran the upgrade from the Linux command line, choosing to backup the home folder.

while backing up the Confluence Installation directory, specifically the file "catalinabkp-delete.out", it froze.  Eventually, it failed with an error "client_loop: send disconnect: Connection reset by peer"

My confluence folder now only contains one file - the installation log file.

the first line of the log file says "java.io.FileNoteFoundException: /opt/atlassian/confluence/atlassian-confluence-7.11.1-x64.bin.7563.dir/stats.properties (no such file or directory)

What can I do to complete the upgrade?
