Confluence - copy image problems

Ersin İnce
July 8, 2026

Scenario 1 (Outlook/OneNote to Confluence): When copying a combined selection of text and images from external applications like desktop Outlook or OneNote, and pasting it into Confluence, the images fail to paste while only the text is successfully transferred. In certain instances, even trying to copy and paste the images individually one by one does not work.

Scenario 2 (Confluence to Outlook/OneNote): When copying a combined selection of text and images from Confluence and pasting it into Outlook or OneNote, all images are lost and only the text appears. Furthermore, when trying to copy and paste these images individually from Confluence into Outlook/OneNote, some images still fail to transfer.

Scenario 3 (Confluence to Word via Export): When exporting a Confluence page to Microsoft Word, the export tool successfully downloads the text and images together. However, if we then try to copy that exported content from Word to use it elsewhere, bulk copy-pasting the text and images together does not work.

Demand:

Seamless Bulk Import: We require the capability to seamlessly import data into Confluence by performing a bulk copy-paste action (transferring text and multiple images together in a single operation) from local applications like Outlook and OneNote.

Seamless Bulk Export: We require the capability to seamlessly export data out of Confluence via a bulk copy-paste action so that we can easily paste full content (text and all images together) into emails or other internal documents when needed.

Hi @Ersin İnce

Unless I'm very much mistaken, you can import Word files to Confluence Data Center directly. And Confluence supports direct exports to Word

In more general terms:

  • Word formatting is a mine field and even if everything looks kosher, the underlying code might not be. As a result....
  • ... copy-pasting content into Confluence introduces all sorts of alien code for formatting and style and this WILL result in errors. This is not Confluence specific.
  • The above applies to Word imports into Confluence

What I used to do is copy-pasting via Google docs. That usually help with SOME issues. But I learned the hard way that copy-pasting anything into on-prem Confluence is a no-no. The safest way is to copy-paste via Notepad / Text Edit in text mode on Mac - both will strip out formatting. And images.

The underlying issue here is the inherently problematic Word format (even copy pasting between two Word versions might result in discrepancies).

I you need to export Word docs in a more sophisticated format, and if Word exports are a part of your long-term content strategy, you can try a marketplace app.

Disclaimer: I work for K15t, maker of Scroll Word Exporter for Confluence.

Hello @Ersin İnce

Data Center ? Cloud ?

That has never worked reliably, and honestly, I do not think it ever will.

When you copy everything in bulk, you also copy hidden formatting in the background, and that is usually what causes the problems.

Also Community Forum are not place for Feature Request.

Best,

Arek🤠

I also cannot paste images into Confluence. I think that is expected and you use the image macro to insert them. It would be cool if you could seamlessly paste them in.
