can you adjust the link so that the copying pageID is in a different space than the new parent page?

I'm afraid not.  The pagid is unique to a page, but it doesn't actually have any hierarchy directly tied to it.  The Copy call only has the unique id to work with, it can't know that you want something in a different space.
