Confluence Backup Size

During last 4 months, The Confluence backup size has gone up 4 times.

This is just blobs of XML , not attachments

How to investigate what is causing to backup size/ Confluence to grow so much

My guess would be that there are a lot of previous versions of Confluence pages being backed up.

The XML back-ups can cause problems, so we don't recommend them for Production instances, as it says in XML backups cause performance problems or 'java.lang.OutOfMemoryError Java heap space':

Confluence xml backups are not recommended for production installations. The XML backup performs poorly under load and require large amounts of memory and thus does not scale. 

Instead of troubleshooting the XML backup size, I recommend changing to a Production Backup Strategy and disabling the automatic XML back-up.
