Cannot seem to create a variable in a template

I have tried dragging a variable onto my confluence template but it does not give me the option to make it show up as a text field.   When I preview the template it just shows as a question mark with text beside it?  Im a missing something.

We need a bit more information to find out what is going on with your reported issue. Along with a few basic steps we ask you to try to see if it may resolve the issue.

Basic Steps:

1. Is the issue present on another browser?
2. Is the issue present within an incognito session?
3. Are other admins having the same issue (if another admin is available to test)?
4. When you mention dragging a variable, can you please further describe this action?
1. Is it the same as the screenshot below?
2. 

Additional information:

1. Which version of Confluence are you presently running?
2. Which User Add-ons do you have enabled within Confluence?
3. Can you please provide a screenshot of what you’re seeing?

Once we have the above information we will attempt to recreate the issue on our end to ensure it’s not a bug. This type of behavior is not normal and we want to confirm there is not a defect within the product.
