Brand-new Confluence Free site cannot create spaces

I created a brand-new Confluence Free site today.  Once logged into the new Confluence site, the Space creation wizard completes with no error, but no space is created.  A redirect page is displayed with the address https://<tenant>.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/TS/overview?XXXXXX with the message “We couldn’t find what you’re looking for”.  Have tried multiple times with a few different names, but same result.

I am logged in as the site/org admin/owner.  Would appreciate any guidance on what may be going on here.

Thanks!

Hello @Aaron Parker

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

Is the subscription for the Free version of Confluence Cloud or a free trial of the Standard or Premium version of Confluence Cloud?

Please try the following.

Click the gear icon near your avatar.

In the new navigation panel on the left, under Security select Space Permissions.

What do you see displayed? Do you see a pop up that says "Upgrade for space permissions"? Do you see a list of the spaces your created?

Hi Trudy,
This is the Free version of Confluence Cloud, not a free trial.  If it matters though, it does appear it may have been reactivating a previous instance, as I did notice the email confirmation I got did indicate that I was reactivating a subscription.

I do see "Upgrade for Space Permissions" when navigating to the location you provided.

Thanks for the additional information. The "Upgrade" message does confirm that you are on the Free version.

Do you see the spaces you have been creating, displayed as a list behind that Upgrade message?

I think I may be misunderstanding what you've done.

Were you previously accessing Confluence using the same base URL? Did you get a message about your subscription being deactivated?

Reactivating a previous subscription is a different process than starting a brand new subscription. Can you describe the steps you went through to get this subscription activated?

Since I am just another user of Confluence I won't be able to access your environment directly. The more detail you can provide about what you did and what you are experiencing the better we will be able to help you.

@Trudy Claspill
I do not see the spaces that have been created.  The creation wizard seemingly completes without error (aside from being redirected to the page indicated in the original post), but I do not see any spaces listed behind that message (or on the Spaces page where they should all be listed).

I'll be honest, I'm not sure I totally understand what has happened here with Confluence!  :D  Months ago when I first signed up for a free Jira account for testing purposes, I believe it may have also provisioned Confluence as well.  I never used it though, so its possible it got deactivated.  Nothing Confluence-related appeared in my tenant this morning before signing up.

Wanting to also experiment with Confluence, I went through the process today of what I thought was signing up for Confluence (using this URL).  I completed this normally.  However, the confirmation email I received had the subject of "Welcome back to Confluence", with the message "Your subscription is successfully reactivated". See the screenshot I've also attached.  This does lead me to believe I apparently did have a Confluence Cloud account/tenant at one point (but it definitely was never used).

Hopefully this clarifies, but happy to provide any additional information.  2026-01-15 19_14_29-Welcome back to Confluence - arp.parker@gmail.com - Gmail — Mozilla Firefox.png

It is possible for an inactive subscription to be deactivated. Atlassian sends emails when your subscription is at risk of deactivation, and another when the subscription is actually deactivated.

I don't t think I'm going to be able to diagnose what happened or what is happening with the failure to create spaces, so I'm going to flag you post here to raise it to the attention of Atlassian Team members. They should get back to you within 2 business days.

Good luck!

Hi @Aaron Parker

Welcome to Atlassian Community!!

I understand that you are unable to create new spaces in your instance.
Ideally, with the free plan you can create unlimited spaces but only permissions are not available.

Any new spaces created should be listed under spaces section or from the below navigation:

Click the gear icon near your avatar.

In the new navigation panel on the left, under Security select Space Permissions.

If there are no spaces listed means then the spaces are not being created, can you please share the specific error message that you receive so that I can look in for any known cause, reason being we cannot access your site due to free plan.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any additional questions regarding this issue. I will be happy to assist you.

 Best Regards,

Hello @Vishalakshi Narayana Swamy

You have offered the same advice I already provided, which the author already tried and provided the outcome. You asked for information (the error message) that the author already provided.

All good, happy to provide actual screenshots of the process.  But the good news is that as I was attempting to reproduce to do so, the issue appears to be resolved now!

Not sure if it just needed some time to resolve on its own or if someone did something, but I've now created two different spaces successfully.

Thanks you both for you help!
