Allowing a user to delete pages

On a Confluence/Cloud Free plan, I have users who belong to the confluence-administrators group and yet cannot delete pages.

I know that in the Free plan I can't customize permissions, but in the default permissions table I clearly see this specific user with full Delete rights, so I'm at a loss.

In the table I see the tag "unlicensed" next to his name, I don't know what's up with that. I'm at the max users count, 10 users, and of course he's one of the 10. 

How can I give a user the right to delete pages? It seems to be harder than it ought to be....

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Checking the details of your site, I can see that there are 9 licensed users only.

Usually, when the site has only Confluence, the groups are administrators, confluence-users, and site-admins. Since it’s not possible to edit the permissions, everyone should have all permissions.

Can you please go to Cog icon > User management and confirm if the user is added to all groups?

I tested here and the “Unlicensed” appears only when the user doesn’t have site access, so please go to the User management and confirm if the user was added to the groups and if the “Has access on site” is enabled.

Dear Angélica,

Thanks for your answer.

The user in question is Thomas Ntafoulis, and was, up to 5min ago, a member of all groups that exist on our site, with the exception of Site Admins.

As I found it peculiar that all users must be Site Admins in order to have the "Delete" right, I asked another user by the name George Papadogiannis to tell me if he has the Delete right. He is only a member of confluence-users and confluence-users-cdialogues-confluence (not a member of Site-admins). He told me that he has the Delete right. So I ensured that the problematic user also has the exact same memberships to those two groups, and I logged in as him to check. I found that he still does not have the Delete right. So we now have two users with the same group membership, where one can delete and the other one cannot.

Please help me get this sorted out.

I can see that you used the Confluence Standard trial and it changed to Free at the end of June. 

Was there any change in the permissions while you were using Standard?

I’m asking because Thomas has two accounts, one of them is inactive, so maybe the user that you see with Delete rights is the other account and not the active one.

Is there any new space that was created after moving from Standard to Free? Is Thomas able to delete pages from his own space?

The problematic account is the active one, with email address= [Removed by moderators]. The other account, the inactive one, with email address= [Removed by moderators], is to be ignored.

The user that I see with Delete rights is the one with email address= [Removed by moderators]. That is the account that has the same membership as the problematic one. Therefore I'd expect them both to have Delete rights.

I'm not aware of any change in Thomas's permissions other than what I did today. In any event, we need this account to have Delete rights moving forward.

I  hope things are 100% clear now.

For  your last questions:

The spaces where the Delete right is not available are older than June 2021.

Yes, he can delete stuff in  his personal space.

Yes, that’s both accounts, but since both have the same full name, maybe who had the permission is the inactive one.

When using the Standard plan, if any changes are made on the permissions and then downgrade to the Free plan, the permissions won’t be reset.

Can you confirm if the page that Thomas is trying to delete is not restricted for him to edit?

Can you share with us a screenshot of the space permissions? 

There are also page restrictions. If the page was restricted to, for example, “Anyone on Confluence can view, some can edit” when it was on Standard, now it won’t be possible to change it back unless you start a new trial of Standard/Premium and remove all the restrictions.

Hi Angelica,

I have used the "log in as" feature to log in as the problematic account. Here is a screenshot of a page that appears to be editable but not delete-able. It appears that both accounts of this same user are involved here.

...and another screenshot of the Space Permissions, as much as I could fit. It gives one the clear understanding that all groups have "Delete" rights, so even if the two accounts are somehow to "blame" for our problem, the group settings override and resolve the mix-up.

The one related to the Space Permissions that I mentioned is the one from the Space itself and not the general one.

Please, go to the Cprofiler Platform space and on the left side click on Space Settings > Permissions.

On this page, it will be possible to see who has delete permissions on this specific space.

I see what you mean now: in the screenshot that you ask for and I list below, the Delete right is quire restricted. What can we do besides go to Standard?

Thank you for checking, George.

The only way to change that is by starting a new trial of Standard or Premium. You don’t need to use the 14-day trial, you can change the plan and then change to Free again.

Go to Cog icon > Billing > Manage subscriptions > Change > Select Standard or Premium > Upgrade.

Once you change, the features will be unblocked so you can modify the permissions and then, follow the same steps to change to Free.
