After creating a Confluence space we are unable to find it searching by the space key.

I am a new confluence administrator. I have had several users unable to find their space by searching using the space key. Some projects work and others do not. 

My steps: Create space>Blank Space>enter data (name and space key)>create 

I am not creating categories. 

Then after the site is created I try to search for the space using the search bar (top ribbon) and enter the space key. I generally get a "no results" message. 

When I look at the Space Directory I find the space I created. 

Based on my search here I have tried re-indexing and my associate has re-indexed from scratch. 

Any one have some trouble shooting help or possible solution? 

I believe I am following all of the steps for creating a space.

The best solution I have is to tell the user to search using "Space Key - XXX" 

The user has to enter the words "Space Key" in order to get the search engine to look only at the assigned space keys.
