Trying to @-mention a teammate on a wiki page in Confluence (cloud) and the auto-complete never shows up. Checked the network requests and it's failing with 504 Gateway Timeout.

@John Prestel

This is a backend timeout: the @-mention user search call is exceeding the upstream response window and the load balancer returns 504, which is usually transient rather than a client misconfiguration. Expect it to clear as service load normalizes or after a short retry window

Possible Causes

  • Service latency or heavy processing on Atlassian’s side triggers an upstream timeout that the load balancer/proxy surfaces as 504
  • The teammate has disabled editor autocomplete, which stops them appearing in @ suggestions even though manual User Mention still works
  • Profile visibility is restricted, limiting discoverability outside or across your Atlassian organization

Quick Fixes

  • Retry shortly and check the Confluence Status page to rule out an active incident impacting mentions/search
  • Use the Share button on the page to notify the teammate directly while autocomplete is flaky
  • Insert via Insert > User Mention, or ask the user to re‑enable autocomplete in Profile > Settings > Editor

Thanks
