Goals + Confluence Databases

Hi,

so I just discovered that Goals works very nicely via SmartLinks with Atlassian Databases.
It's something we plan to use and that I want to highlight for others as a useful feature. 

The nice thing about this is the single-click possibility to create updates.
If you link to the update page, you get a side-bar and can directly update. Showing that in the picture below.

The Goals interface - if you or your organization has many goals) is clumsy. Lots of clicks.
Here's a feature request:
For Jira-Tickets, there's an explicit type where  you can embed fields that are linked to a Ticket. It would be awesome to have that for Goals

The most important fields would be

• Status (and allowing for that to be filtered)
• Last Update (!) - this is a critically missing field in Goals. Goals provides no condensed way of listing all last status updates.
• The metric (value)
• Date of last update

Hi, I'm on the goals screen. When creating a goal, I need to link a project and then link the issues related to that goal. But I can't find my project; the project list is blank. Do I need to import some kind of project? If I try to create a project, when searching for the epics in the list, I can't find any.

First of all, welcome to community! ✨

When you create a goal and try to link a "project," it's looking for Atlassian Home Projects — these are standalone communication/tracking pages in Atlassian Home, not your Jira project boards. If none have been created yet for your team's work, the list will be empty.

You have two options to connect work to your goal:

1. Link Jira epics directly to the goal (simplest approach) — On the goal page's right sidebar, you should see an option to link items like sub-goals, projects, and Jira epics. You can paste a Jira epic link directly there, or search for it. This connects your day-to-day Jira work to the goal without needing an Atlassian Home Project at all.

2. Create an Atlassian Home Project first, then sync it with a Jira epic — If you do want a project layer in between, you can create an Atlassian Home Project from the goal page. Once created, you link it to a Jira epic by pasting the epic's URL into the project's "Where is the work tracked?" field. Only parent-level work items (epics by default) can be synced this way.

+1 to this request. I’d specifically like the ability to display an Atlassian Goal in Confluence with both its latest status update and the metric used to measure progress against the Goal.

Today, embedding a Goal allows us to surface the latest status update, but the associated metric/progress isn’t displayed.

Ideally, the Confluence view would include:

• Goal name
• Current status
• Current metric value + target (e.g., 48% of 70%)
• Latest status update
• Date of latest update

This would allow us to use Atlassian Goals as the source of truth while using Confluence as a stakeholder reporting layer. Stakeholders could see both the qualitative update and quantitative progress in one place without requiring teams to manually recreate or maintain the Goal metric in Confluence.

It would be nice to be able to show the latest update directly in the column in some way. If hover over the Goal showed latest update and not the Overview that could work. But would also be great if you could have the latest update as a column itself in the Confluence database (and Confluence tables and Jira lists where work items are linked to the Goal).

It seems like most people want to use Goals and Projects to replace legacy static note processes in tables and work items in order to show their status updates across more surfaces and tap into the advanced functionality. Seems like most people know enough about the Goal by the Name and are looking for the most recent update along with status when scanning a list.

What do you all think? Do you hear that same feedback?

I can definitely see that perspective. In my experience, it’s been a cultural shift to move away from the approach of having everything visible in a single table and instead align with how the Goals experience is intended to be used. 

I’ve approached it by using status updates as the focused view for communicating the latest health, progress, and context related to metric progress, and sharing the specific view (based on the audience )in meetings or through direct links to the status updates stream. 

I do wonder whether, including the full status update within the directory could make the view overly context-heavy and shift it back toward a spreadsheet-style experience, rather than maintaining the distinct purpose of each experience.

Yes, I can make it work directly using Goals in my own flows. And maybe the piece I am more referencing is for Projects. I understand the perspective when you are looking at other data alongside your Goals/Projects (like other values in the database or work items tied to them) that you may want to scan a full list and have a quick read on a "Detailed Status" of sorts...

I am trying to get people to use Goals and Projects instead of a static note cell... basically baby steps to get them away from their spreadsheet mindset. If they can store a value like that on an object that is meant for it and start to see its true power beyond that note, they may shift their whole behavior for how they run status updates and meetings.
