linux user interaction with bitbucket

we're migrating from git with gitolite. our developers are used to cloning the entire repo and then creating a branch locally. when development is complete they push to origin. this works well because the developers often work offline at home or someplace other than online in the office. we are a linux shop.

with bitbucket what is a typical workflow? the download of a branch seems slow especially over VPN and a non-started with our folks. are there alternatives? all the online demos feature Sourcetree so that doesn't help. basic question then is starting in jira with the bitbucket integration how does a linux developer get work done.
