is a pull request same as merge request ?

The pull request is essentially a request to take a delta from src branch and merge to destination branch by the person that should be approving the pull request ?

Yes, "Merge Request" and "Pull Request" are the exact same thing.

"Merge Request" is the GitLab name for the concept.   Bitbucket and Github use the term "Pull Request."
