getting a 401 with curl

I execute the following and I get a 401...
curl --request GET --user <sso> --url https://jgghh --header 'Accept: application/json

When I access jira manually I first enter my email address then I get redirected to my sso screen where I enter my sso and password. I tried various combination including  running two curl commands 1st creating a cookie file and passing the cookie to the second curl command .. however no luck so far any ideas?
