can you deploy into existing VPC, that's not an ASI?

I tried updating the cloudformation template with parameters to deploy the infrastructure into an existing VPC, instead of the one they create.
It almost worked, but the NFS server build failed due to ansible not doing what it needed to do. The appserver ec2 system started successfully, but all the file system content was local so as soon as I tried to upgrade by removing a server, it all failed dramatically.
So is it possible to deploy the atlassian cluster into an existing network?
