The original creator Linus Torvolds, says he's egotistical and likes to name things after himself. So "Linux" was the first thing and "git" was the next. It was a (nerd) joke - "git" is British slang for a mean person.. If you're in the receiving end any of Linus's pull request comments you'll perhaps understand..
