Hello, I'm a student working in a team project of more than 5 users. We wish to use bitbucket as our git-based repository. We're all students and using our university emails and we were under the impression that our accounts would automatically convert to an unlimited academic plan as per what is said here: https://www.atlassian.com/software/bitbucket/pricing#free-community-or-academic-subscriptions. Yet when a 6th member of our team project is invited, the following message appears: The owner of this repository is already at their plan limit and will need to upgrade before adding more users. How do we fix this problem?
Hello @Pierre-Olivier Fortin ! Welcome to the Atlassian Community!
I think you're going to have to follow up and apply for the classroom licensing. The application link follows: https://www.atlassian.com/solutions/survey/academic-license-request#/
Ensure all the members of your team are using university-provided email addresses. Bitbucket usually checks your email domain to apply the academic plan, so if one of your members is using a personal email address instead, it might cause the system to apply the free plan with a 5-user limit. I’ve run into similar issues with the academic plan setup too—especially when trying to get access as a student team for a college project. Sometimes it takes a while to verify the email or the system just bugs out. What worked for us was getting our university’s IT department to confirm our org domain, but even that was a bit of a process. While we were stuck waiting, I actually found this pretty interesting take on https://www.anonymoushackers.net/artificial-intelligence/why-students-should-use-ai-for-homework-pros-cons/ why students should consider using AI for homework - not just to finish faster but to understand the pros and cons of AI in academic work. Kinda eye-opening, especially with how much tech is blending into education lately. Hopefully Atlassian smooths this stuff out soon because it really slows down student-led dev work.
