Migrating from Visual Source Safe to BitBucket

We use VSS from many years. Now, we we want to migrate the visual source safe repositories to BitBucket.
What is the best choice to make this?

I've never heard of Visual Source Safe. Is it a service for a more common versioning system? If so, which?

Bitbucket supports Git and Mercurial.
