We are running Bitbucket Free, an instance created years ago by an user that is not a curent employee.

We need to remove this user in order to be able to enjoy the 5 free seats, but we are always getting this error:

Hi Jesús and welcome to the community!

This error shows when someone tries to remove a user from their own personal workspace, which is not possible.

Just to give you some context: up until a few months ago, when a user would sign up for Bitbucket, Bitbucket would automatically create a workspace for this user. Such a workspace is considered to be the user's personal workspace, and the user cannot be removed from it. We have a bug report with a request for providing a better error message:

If this user is no longer with your company and you want to make use of the 5 free seats, you'll need to create a new workspace and move the repositories there. If you have admin access to the repositories, you can transfer the repositories to a new workspace:

If you don't have admin access to the repos, you can clone the repos, create new empty repositories in a new workspace, and then push from the clones.

Please keep in mind that a new workspace means that the repos' URL will change. Developers working on these repos will need to update the remote URL in their local clones. Any integrations with third party tools may also need to be updated. User access will also need to be set up in the new workspace.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions.

Kind regards,
Theodora
