Do I need to upgrade Stash to Bitbucket?

We need to renew our Stash license, but before we do that I would like to know if it would be advisable to upgrade to Bitbucket first. (or are the licenses inter exchangeable?)

The licences should be interchangable.  If you do have problems, you should be able to install Bitbucket Server, and regenerate a new key for it in your my.Atlassian account (worst case, install and upgrade, grab an evaluation licence and raise a support request with whatever error your actual licence throws.  But I doubt you'll need to)
