Hello,
I tried signing up for bitbucket, was asked to supply my new workspace name, which I did. After a significant wait I was shown a 404 page and now my workspace name is no longer available.
Any suggestions?

There might have been some instability during the workspace creation, but if you are not able to create it again with the same name, it's very likely that your first attempt succeeded despite the 404 message.
You can confirm that by navigating to https://admin.atlassian.com, clicking on the organization under which you have created the workspace, and then selecting Products in the top navigation bar.
If the workspace was created, you will see it listed in the list of products. You can then assign yourself or a User group the Product Admin role to be the Admin of the workspace (learn more on Make someone a product admin).
